Cloud Engineer

A LITTLE ABOUT US:

Big dreams often start small. From an idea in an Auckland pub amongst a couple of mates and a loyal foundation customer, we have grown into The Instillery, a true enterprise-class cloud enabler of over 100 staff which operates across 3 countries with a Kiwi headquarters and what we believe to be some of the leading Cloud & DevOps talent from across the globe.

Our mission at The Instillery is to “Deliver velocity with confidence and enable kiwi’s to dominate both here at home and on the global stage”.  We do this by helping enterprise customers adopt and harness the power of cloud computing. We believe that the growth of a great business can only be fuelled by great people.

We are an award-winning team of transformational technology consultants and BUILDERS that partners with the likes of AWS, Google, Hashicorp, Microsoft, Riverbed and Zscaler across New Zealand, Australia and the UK.

We are a driving force in the future of DevOps, Cloud and Container based professional design and build services with an eye to the development and evolution of associated cloud managed services.

We support our customers across five core pillars:

  • Cloud Platform Build & Migration
  • Enterprise DevOps Transformation
  • DevSecOps and Cloud Security
  • Cloud Native Software Development
  • Data Platforms & Analytics

Currently, we are experiencing incredible growth and have built an amazing team of passionate technologists and are an advocate for challenging intelligent and talented people, like you!

This is a great opportunity if you want to master your craft alongside some of the best Cloud & DevOps minds in the industry, or if you’re the kind of person who’s not shy and has an opinion or two.

Here, that means not just giving answers to problems and riding into the sunset.

It means getting involved with clients on an internal level. Caring about what they do, understanding the customer and getting them to care about what you do. Solving their problems, but before you leave, making sure they understand enough that they can make the most of it, so you haven’t wasted your time!

You’re an experienced Public Cloud Solution Architect or Cloud Engineer - who hasn’t been blinded by their own bullshit and STILL has the ability to get on the tools to ensure you can actually BUILD and stay on top of your game.

You will have gone well beyond the ability to read the latest release notes, and sit the theoretical vendor exams.  You are able to demonstrate practical ability to design, build and communicate fully automated, enterprise-class solutions...

You will eat, sleep and breathe public cloud (not literally, we don't mean walking into someone who was vaping in the doorway) and are crazy about containerisation and the benefits containerisation can deliver for big business.

Through the application of DevOps principles, you will have reference-able examples from the past 12 months that demonstrate your ability to assist your clients to:

  • Transition to agile application creation and deployment
  • Enable continuous development, integration, and deployment
  • Create application container images at build/release time rather than deployment time, thereby decoupling applications from infrastructure.
  • Enhance Observability. Not only surfaces OS-level information and metrics, but also application health and other signals.
  • Ensure environmental consistency across development, testing, and production
  • Unlock from single platform vendors to enable true Cloud and OS portability
  • Provide true Application-centric management
    • Raising the level of abstraction from running an OS on virtual hardware to running an application on an OS using logical resources.
  • Transition to loosely coupled, distributed, elastic, liberated micro-services
    • Where applications are broken into smaller, independent pieces and can be deployed and managed dynamically – effectively killing the monolithic stack running on one big single-purpose machine.
  • Ensure predictable application performance.
  • Increase resource utilisation and density
  • Combined with a strong grasp of container technology including container orchestration with tools such as:
    • Kubernetes, Rancher, Docker Swarm, Nomad or similar.
    • Solid Configuration Management Experience with either: Puppet, Chef, Ansible or Saltstack.
    • Solid understanding of Microservices and APIs.
    • Experience working in an Agile environment.

As part of the Instillery’s Hyperscale Cloud team, you will be responsible for designing & building technical solutions in a highly strategic, highly consultative framework with the largest, most complex enterprise/government customers and prospects.

You are comfortable working with CIO’s, application product owners and technical personnel to facilitate complex, innovative, and often non-standard cloud & automation focussed service offerings that deliver measurable business outcomes.

You will be working side by side with the leaders of The Instillery business, sales team and existing legendary technical talent to deliver on client deadlines.

The client engagements are stimulating and this role represents a very rare opportunity to work on solving some seriously challenging business problems and driving velocity to capture new market opportunities leveraging Cloud and Automation for the biggest organisations in New Zealand.

Your previous experience with systems, application and infrastructure platform architecture discovery will be of full use in this role, as you will be tackling some of New Zealand's largest enterprise's roadblocks in their journey to the cloud.

Your confidence stems from a proven track record of successful mass migrations (examples of more than 200+ virtual machines) of enterprise-class applications and systems that you have delivered when discussing what is possible in the cloud with prospective clients.

This confidence will enable you to articulate to clients both verbally and in written format: How to operate as a critical part of a client CCoE team through to post engagement report writing highlighting findings, through to as-built documentation and more formal presentations.

Your ability to assess the balance between hybrid cloud, application transformation, the dreaded but sometimes unavoidable lift-and-shift as an interim state but most importantly new infrastructure as code templating, CI/CD or DevOps is second nature to you.

As a team, we have firmly established ourselves as the no#1 in Cloud in New Zealand.

We cannot even claim to be no#1 without the ongoing relentless pursuit of the top talent in the market. However, rest assured that we say “top talent” we still mean great humans. No one person is bigger than the Instillery famz...

In a perfect world, this would be someone who understands IAM and securing access to resources and actions in the cloud.  Someone who is very familiar with Microsoft's product range but would prefer Postgres over SQL Server. Someone who understands GIT workflow and is familiar with build-test-deploy-release pipelines.  Someone who has read The Phoenix Project. Someone who doesn't back down when told that the client has just spent 6 years migrating to SAP in-house and has given up on moving it to the cloud.

In this role, you will lead the Instillery team on client engagements where we work with Enterprise and Government Clients to perform a data-driven infrastructure discovery and cloud feasibility assessment. This included reviewing current infrastructure platforms and applications with a comparison of major public cloud vendors with the objective of business continuity, innovation, and material cost savings through the pirate migration acronym RRRRRR's: Removal, Retention, Replatforming, Rehosting, Repurchasing, and Refactoring.

The results of our discovery process provide to our clients insightful and actionable recommendations on what they can do with public cloud, the available offerings and enable decision making by applying our cloud selection criteria (price, effort, access to resources, SLA's, etc) to plan and prioritise migrations of identified systems and applications.

ADMIN:

  • This role reports to our General Manager of Delivery based in Auckland, you will work closely with our high-performing tech-ops and sales team

  • We offer great family benefits through flexible hours and a tech ops recognition programme

SO WHAT BOXES DO YOU NEED TO TICK?

If you only have associate level certs, you should still apply.
  • We’d expect you to have an understanding of how web services and REST API services work.
  • Because of your comfortable understanding of the systems you work with, you find it easy to use basic and common language to explain benefits and impact to people who aren't Cloud Natives like yourself
  • You don’t get drawn into to technical “big d*ck” competitions with highly strung tech enthusiasts but can clearly articulate a view and maintain quiet confidence in your position with the ability to back it up with hard and fast examples.
  • You are patient and helpful but most of all you’re a good human. And looking to be part of our team that is highly competitive but at the end of the day shares the same mission: “To deliver velocity with confidence for our customers and to celebrate the W’s!”
